​​Studies show that people with eczema have much higher levels of a bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus on their skin, particularly during flare-ups.  Once on the skin, Staphylococcus aureus—also known as Staph, Staph aureus, or S. aureus—can secrete toxins that damage the skin barrier, increase itching, and activate the immune system.
